MLS Cup 2026: why December’s final marks a calendar turning point

MLS Cup is set for December 18, 2026. Compare the 2026 playoffs, the 14-game 2027 Sprint Season and the new July-to-May calendar launching in 2027-28.

The MLS Cup scheduled for Friday, December 18, 2026, will be Major League Soccer's last December final before its calendar change. The US-Canadian league will move away from a season completed within one calendar year, hold a transition competition in the first half of 2027 and, starting that July, operate on a cycle ending with the championship match in May 2028. The change is official, but it does not mean MLS will stop playing matches in December.

The shift was approved on November 13, 2025. Under the announced plan, MLS aims to align competition and transfer periods more closely with major international leagues and reduce overlaps with national-team call-ups. Understanding the transition requires distinguishing three competitions and their rules.

The three MLS calendars from 2026 to 2028

202634 matches per club; final matchday November 7November 18 to December 1818 qualifiers, nine per conference; Wild Card and best-of-three first-round series

2027-2834 matches per club from July 2027, with a winter breakPlayoffs and MLS Cup in May 2028Detailed playoff format still under review by MLS

The table separates each edition's regular season from its title-deciding stage. The 2026 final has a fixed date; in the documents reviewed through October 29, 2026, MLS had not published exact dates for the May 2027 and May 2028 championship matches.

How will the 2026 playoffs finish on December 18?

The 2026 regular season ends on Decision Day, November 7, after 34 matches for each of the 30 clubs. The top nine teams in each conference qualify. The eighth- and ninth-placed sides meet in the Wild Card on November 18, while the top seven enter Round One directly.

From November 20 to December 2, Round One consists of best-of-three series, with no aggregate score: the first team to win two matches advances. Conference semifinals follow on December 5 and 6, and conference finals on December 11 and 12. Those stages and MLS Cup are single-match knockout ties.

On December 18, the Eastern and Western Conference champions will contest MLS Cup. The finalist ranked higher in the overall regular-season standings earns hosting rights under the published rules. The teams and venue will depend on the upcoming results. MLS explicitly identifies this match as its last December MLS Cup before the new calendar.

Why is there a short season in 2027?

The 2027 Sprint Season bridges the gap between December's final and the new July kickoff. Instead of the usual 34 matches, each club will play 14 regular-season fixtures, all against teams from its own conference, with seven at home and seven away. With 15 teams in each conference, every club faces its 14 conference rivals once.

A Reuters report published on October 29, covering fixtures announced by MLS, identifies Inter Miami vs FC Cincinnati on February 19 as the opener and May 8 as Decision Day. The regular season will therefore end in May ahead of playoffs also scheduled for that month. The remaining fixtures and possible schedule changes should be checked against further official updates.

The top eight clubs in each conference qualify, making 16 playoff teams. Unlike in 2026, the entire Sprint Season postseason will use single-elimination matches, culminating in May 2027 when the East and West champions meet in MLS Cup. MLS says the team placed higher in the final overall 2027 Supporters' Shield standings will host each tie.

The short competition has consequences beyond its trophy: results will determine five MLS berths in the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and 18 places in the 2028 Leagues Cup, nine from each conference. It is neither a friendly preseason nor a competition without a champion.

What changes between July 2027 and May 2028?

The 2027-28 season launches the July-to-May schedule. Each club returns to a 34-match regular season, but play spans two calendar years. MLS plans a break from mid-December 2027 until early February 2028, with no league matches in January. December 18, 2026, therefore marks the end of championship finals at that time of year, not the removal of December from the playing calendar.

The playoffs and MLS Cup will move to May, but MLS was still reviewing the 2027-28 postseason format as of the October 29, 2026, check. Neither the 2026 best-of-three opening round nor the Sprint Season's all-single-elimination bracket can automatically be assumed for 2027-28.

Why did MLS choose the new calendar?

MLS cites three main goals: better alignment with the global midyear transfer window, fewer clashes between club matches and FIFA international dates, and a May postseason. The league announced its decision after a two-year review. These are MLS's stated institutional reasons, not a guarantee that all scheduling conflicts will disappear.

For supporters, the sequence is the key: a title on December 18, 2026, another champion in May 2027 after a 14-match regular season, and the first July-to-May cycle's championship match in 2028. Match dates and rules not yet published should be treated as pending, rather than settled.

Checked: October 29, 2026. Coverage concerns men's professional MLS in the United States and Canada. Future dates remain subject to official changes.
