Palmeiras or Estudiantes can face Paris Saint-Germain in the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup final only by winning the Copa Libertadores and then two matches in Qatar: against Toluca on 9 December and Mamelodi Sundowns on 12 December. PSG already have a place in the final on 16 December. The identity of South America's representative still depends on the continental final on 28 November.
Who will claim South America's place?
Palmeiras and Estudiantes will contest the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores final on 28 November at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay. The winner will represent South America at the Intercontinental Cup. As of the 25 October 2026 check, neither had secured that place: both reached the Libertadores final after beating Fluminense and Flamengo, respectively, on penalties, as FIFA reported on 23 October.
There are 11 days between the Libertadores final and the South American champion's scheduled opening match in Qatar. Whether Palmeiras or Estudiantes travels to the tournament will therefore be settled on the pitch before that first international fixture, not through an additional FIFA invitation or selection.
The route from 9 to 16 December, step by step
| Date in 2026 | Competition | Scheduled matchup | Stadium and city | Requirement for the South American club |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 December | FIFA Derby of the Americas | Libertadores winners v Toluca (Mexico) | Jassim bin Hamad, Doha | Beat Toluca to reach the Challenger Cup |
| 12 December | FIFA Challenger Cup | Derby of the Americas winners v Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) | Jassim bin Hamad, Doha | Have won on 9 December and then beat Sundowns to reach the final |
| 16 December | FIFA Intercontinental Cup final | Paris Saint-Germain (France) v Challenger Cup winners | Ahmad bin Ali, Al Rayyan | Have won on 9 and 12 December to face PSG |
The sequence is a knockout path: beating Toluca does not provide direct entry to the final. It sets up the match against Sundowns, and only the Challenger Cup winners earn the right to play PSG. Each of the first two fixtures also awards a separate trophy under FIFA's official naming.
Why do Toluca, Sundowns and PSG enter at different stages?
Toluca earned their place in the matchup as CONCACAF Champions Cup winners. African champions Mamelodi Sundowns have already qualified for the Challenger Cup after beating Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli 2-1 in Pretoria on 19 September. Earlier, Al Ahli beat Auckland FC 1-0 in Jeddah on 26 August in the opening match of the 2026 competition.
PSG, the UEFA Champions League winners and defending Intercontinental Cup holders, enter directly into the final. That position follows the structure announced by FIFA; it does not mean PSG already know their opponents. Palmeiras or Estudiantes must win both matches in Qatar to take the other final berth.
Which venues are confirmed, and what is still unknown?
FIFA announced on 22 October that Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha will host the Derby of the Americas and the Challenger Cup. The final will take place at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, also in Qatar. The concluding sequence therefore spans three dates but only two stadiums.
In the official material and match-specific reporting consulted through 25 October 2026, kickoff times for those three matches had not yet been confirmed. Confirmed dates and venues should not be mistaken for a complete kickoff or broadcast schedule. The sporting scenario also remains conditional on the Libertadores final and the two qualifying matches.
