2026 Women's Libertadores title opens doors to two FIFA tournaments

The South American champions qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's Champions Cup and the 2028 FIFA Women's Club World Cup. Why Corinthians already have one berth.

The 2026 CONMEBOL Women's Libertadores champions will secure South America's place in the FIFA Women's Champions Cup 2027 and a berth in the FIFA Women's Club World Cup 2028, according to FIFA's 23 October update. These are separate tournaments with different schedules and qualification rules. Corinthians are the key exception: they have already qualified for the 2028 Club World Cup through previous continental titles, but must win the 2026 Libertadores to take part in the 2027 Champions Cup.

Two competitions and two qualification routes

The Champions Cup brings together the champion representatives of FIFA's six confederations in an intercontinental competition. The 2028 Club World Cup is a different, 19-team tournament. Winning the Libertadores does not mean competing twice in the same event, nor does it automatically mean winning a FIFA trophy.

The route to the 2027 Champions Cup

The South American champions enter directly at the semi-final stage against Barcelona, winners of the 2025/26 UEFA Women's Champions League. That match is scheduled for 27 January 2027 at Nu Stadium in Miami. The other semi-final, between Club América and the team emerging from the Asian, African and Oceanian preliminary pathway, is scheduled for 26 January. The final and third-place match are set for 31 January.

These dates reflect the update announced by FIFA on 22 October and repeated on 23 October 2026. Earlier tournament information carried a different window for the final stage, so the organising body's latest schedule takes precedence. CONMEBOL's Champions Cup place depends on the 2026 title, rather than a club's cumulative Libertadores record.

Why Corinthians have already qualified for 2028

The FIFA Women's Club World Cup 2028 will feature 19 clubs in the United States from 5 to 30 January. CONMEBOL has three places. FIFA prioritises continental champions from 2024 to 2027 and provides for club-ranking allocations when a team wins more than one edition. The South American ranking methodology has yet to be established with the confederation.

Having won the 2024 and 2025 Women's Libertadores titles, Corinthians were among the first seven qualified clubs announced by FIFA on 22 October. Winning the 2026 tournament would not award them a second place in the same Club World Cup: the remaining places would be allocated under FIFA's ranking rules. For clubs not yet qualified, the 2026 title provides the sporting qualification route highlighted by FIFA.

That is the crucial difference: Corinthians can already have their 2028 place without holding the 2027 place. To face Barcelona in Miami, they must win the South American tournament again.

When will the South American champions be decided?

As of the 24 October 2026 update, before the quarter-finals have been decided, eight clubs remain in the tournament in Ecuador. Palmeiras face Independiente Santa Fe and Corinthians meet Independiente Dragonas on 24 October. Deportivo Cali play Olimpia and Cruzeiro meet Libertad on 25 October. The semi-finals are scheduled for 28 October and the final for 31 October in Quito.

The 2026 title has not yet been decided. The club that will face Barcelona in January 2027 and the allocation of the remaining South American Club World Cup places depend on the results and FIFA's qualification criteria.
