2026 CAF Women’s Champions League: groups, opening games and Morocco draw rule

The CAF draw set two groups and four opening matches on 1 and 2 November. See why AS FAR and FUS Rabat were separated and why the WAFU B berth remains unconfirmed.

The 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League will place FC Masar, Mamelodi Sundowns, FUS Rabat and Lekié Football Filles in Group A. Group B comprises AS FAR, Kawempe Muslim Ladies, USFAS Bamako and a place reserved for the WAFU B representative, whose identity had not been confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as of the 23 October check. Egypt will host the tournament from 1 to 15 November.

The draw took place in Cairo on 20 October. The two Moroccan clubs were not allocated entirely by chance: reigning champions AS FAR had already been fixed in Group B, and the specific draw procedure required FUS Rabat to be placed in Group A.

The eight entrants are divided into two groups of four clubs. The top two finishers in each group advance to the semi-finals. Therefore, “WAFU B” denotes a regional berth rather than a named, confirmed club: CAF left that place unidentified in material issued on 20 and 21 October.

Which teams meet in the opening round?

CAF’s published schedule lists four first-round matches, split by group and day. The document consulted gives the dates but does not state kick-off times, so no times are attributed to the following fixtures.

2 NovemberBAS FAR vs Kawempe Muslim Ladies
2 NovemberBUSFAS Bamako vs WAFU B representative

FC Masar against Sundowns will open the competition on 1 November. The clubs also met in the 2024 edition, when the Egyptian side won 1-0, according to CAF. AS FAR, meanwhile, begin their title defence against Kawempe Muslim Ladies on 2 November. That 2024 result must not be mistaken for a result from the 2026 tournament, whose matches had not taken place by this article’s cut-off.

How did the draw keep AS FAR and FUS Rabat apart?

Before drawing the other clubs, CAF reserved position A1 for host-country representatives FC Masar and B1 for title-holders AS FAR. Mamelodi Sundowns and USFAS Bamako formed the first pot of clubs to be allocated, ranked at this level on performances across the previous three editions. The first club drawn from this pot would enter Group A and the second Group B; their positions within each group would be decided using separate containers labelled Pot A and Pot B.

The second pot comprised Kawempe Muslim Ladies, Lekié Football Girls, FUS Rabat and the WAFU B berth. To prevent both Moroccan representatives entering the same group, FUS Rabat’s ball was given a different colour and had to be drawn first. FUS was thus directed into Group A, while its precise position, A2, A3 or A4, remained subject to a draw. The next name drawn from Pot 2 would join Group B, with the process continuing until all eight places had been filled.

This was an explicit measure in the procedure for this edition. It does not establish a universal ban on clubs from the same country sharing a group in every CAF competition, nor does it mean that every team’s position was fixed in advance. Only A1 and B1 were reserved before the balls were drawn.

What remains undecided before November?

The identity of the WAFU B representative was the only gap in the official CAF group list as of 23 October. The schedule already places that entrant against USFAS Bamako on 2 November; naming a club before official confirmation would misrepresent the draw.

Group A will play again on 4 and 7 November, and Group B on 5 and 8 November. The semi-finals are scheduled for 11 November, with each group winner facing the runner-up from the other group. The third-place match is set for 14 November and the final for 15 November. These dates and opponents reflect the published schedule and may be revised subsequently by the organisers.
