Banfield vs Lanús: why the derby is interzonal in the 2026 Clausura

Banfield play in Zone B and Lanús in Zone A. Here is why the 24 October derby is interzonal, how its points count and why the Clausura has separate group standings.

Banfield vs Lanús is an interzonal derby in Argentina's 2026 Clausura because the clubs are in different groups: Banfield belongs to Zone B and Lanús to Zone A. Liga Profesional regulations allow matches between teams from separate zones during the group phase. The round 14 fixture is scheduled for Saturday, 24 October, at 2:45 p.m. Argentina time (UTC-3), at Estadio Florencio Sola, with Banfield at home.

Interzonal describes how the fixture is organised, not a separate competition or a knockout tie. The points count towards each club's own zone standings, rather than towards a single Clausura table used to determine the round-of-16 qualifiers.

Why is the southern derby an interzonal match?

The first stage of the Clausura has two zones of 15 teams. The LPF's official schedule expressly identifies Banfield vs Lanús as interzonal. It labels each club's preceding fixture as a match within its own zone: Banfield vs Argentinos Juniors in Zone B and Platense vs Lanús in Zone A in round 13.

The clubs' local rivalry explains the derby status, but interzonal is a technical description: the opponents were assigned to different groups. The designation does not move Banfield into Zone A or make Lanús a member of Zone B.

How do matches between zones work?

Article 14.1 of the regulations provides for one match against each of the other 14 teams in a club's zone. On regular matchdays, there are seven internal fixtures in each zone plus a derby or interzonal match between the two clubs without an intra-zone opponent that round. The competition also includes an additional round of interzonal fixtures, making 16 matchdays in the zone phase.

That means each club plays 14 games against opponents from its own group and two against teams from the other zone. Article 14.1.1 says the Clausura follows the Apertura 2026 fixture programme with home venues reversed. For the 24 October derby, Banfield is the confirmed home side.

Where do the points go, and why is there no single standings table?

Under Article 15, the Clausura standings are compiled separately for each zone using points earned across all 16 matchdays, including interzonal games. A win earns three points, a draw one and a loss none. The derby result will therefore affect Banfield's points in Zone B and Lanús's points in Zone A.

As a pre-round-14 snapshot, TyC Sports' standings published on 22 October showed:

ClubClausura zonePositionPointsMatches
BanfieldB12th1313
LanúsA5th2313

These positions come from different tables and reflect the situation before the derby, not places in a combined 30-club league. Under Article 14.2, the top eight teams from each zone qualify for the round of 16, subject to the regulations' relegation-related restrictions. Knockout pairings then pit clubs from opposite zones against each other.

The annual overall table is different: Article 24 combines points from the Apertura and Clausura zone phases for other season-wide purposes. That table exists but does not replace the two group standings used to determine the Clausura round-of-16 places.
