Brazil v Norway at the U-17 Women's World Cup: why a draw guarantees a round-of-16 place

With four points in Group C, Brazil will qualify directly for the round of 16 with a draw against Norway on 24 October. See the standings and Canada v Ghana scenarios.

A draw against Norway on Saturday, 24 October 2026, will secure Brazil a direct place in the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup round of 16. Brazil have four points in Group C after two matches and would move to five; Norway would finish with four, Ghana can reach at most four, and only Canada could overtake Brazil, with six. Brazil therefore cannot finish lower than second if the match ends level.

This assessment uses Group C results through 21 October, before the final round. It does not depend on third-placed teams in the other groups.

What are the Group C standings before the final round?

Brazil beat Canada 6-2 on 18 October and drew 3-3 with Ghana on 21 October. Elsewhere in Group C, Norway beat Ghana 3-0 and lost 3-2 to Canada. The table covers only those first two rounds, with goal difference calculated from the official results.

Ghana21-3

The last two fixtures, Brazil v Norway and Ghana v Canada, are scheduled for 24 October and will kick off simultaneously according to FIFA's fixture list.

Scenario matrix: what does each combination mean?

This matrix combines all three possible results for Brazil with the outcome of Ghana v Canada. If Brazil win, the other result cannot change who tops the group. After a Brazilian defeat, tie-breakers may be required.

Brazil v NorwayGhana v CanadaBrazil pointsBrazil's Group C position
WinAny result71st place, direct qualification

LossCanada win43rd place; ranking of best third-placed teams
LossCanada-Ghana draw42nd place, direct qualification on head-to-head against Canada
LossGhana win42nd or 3rd; tie-break against Ghana

A win puts Brazil on seven points and guarantees first place. A draw takes them to five and sends them through as group winners unless Canada beat Ghana; in that event Brazil qualify in second place. No draw scenario leaves Brazil third.

What if Brazil lose to Norway?

Norway would move to six points and overtake Brazil. If Canada also beat Ghana, Canada would reach six, leaving Brazil third on four. If Canada and Ghana draw, they finish on four and two points respectively; Brazil and Canada would both have four, but Brazil's 6-2 head-to-head win gives Brazil second place.

If Ghana beat Canada, Brazil and Ghana would finish on four points. Their head-to-head encounter ended 3-3, so the next criteria, beginning with overall goal difference, would determine their order. Brazil could finish second or third. It would be incorrect to treat every defeat as automatic elimination or guaranteed qualification.

Direct qualification is not the same as the best-third-place route

Article 12.4 of FIFA's regulations provides for 24 teams in six groups. The top two in every group qualify directly for the round of 16, while the four best third-placed teams, from six groups, take the remaining four spots. Finishing third in Group C therefore does not, by itself, confirm a place in the knockouts.

For teams level on points within the same group, Article 13.1 prioritises results between the tied teams, followed where needed by goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary criteria and drawing of lots. Article 13.2 uses a different sequence to rank teams finishing third across groups: points from all three matches, goal difference, goals scored, disciplinary record and drawing of lots. That route may depend on other groups' final results.

When and where is Brazil v Norway?

FIFA's match-specific schedule lists Brazil v Norway for 24 October at 11:00 Brasília time (15:00 local time in Morocco), on Pitch 2 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in the Rabat/Salé area. Ghana v Canada is listed for the same kick-off time on Pitch 1.

Two official publications disagree on the kick-off: a 21 October CBF report states 12:00 Brasília time, whereas FIFA's schedule states 11:00. This preview follows the competition organiser's published fixture time, while noting the discrepancy so readers can reconfirm the schedule before kick-off.

Reporting cut-off: 23 October 2026, using Group C results through 21 October; scenarios assume the matches on 24 October are completed normally.
