Wiliete knock out Sundowns after two draws: away goals explained

Wiliete reached the African Champions League group stage after a 0-0 first leg and 1-1 second leg. Here is how the 1-1 aggregate and away-goals tie-breaker worked.

Angola's Wiliete SC reached the 2026/27 CAF Champions League group stage without beating Mamelodi Sundowns in either match. The first leg ended 0-0 in Lubango on 18 October, and the return finished 1-1 in Pretoria on 23 October. With the aggregate score tied at 1-1, the away-goals rule settled the tie: Wiliete scored once in South Africa, while Sundowns failed to score in Angola. There was no penalty shoot-out.

How the two draws added up

The away goal was not counted twice in the aggregate score. Each team scored once across the two regulation-time matches; only after that equality was the tie-breaker applied. That is why the 1-1 draw in Pretoria had a different effect from the first leg's 0-0: a scoring draw favoured the away team.

What CAF's regulations say and why penalties were unnecessary

Section III, clauses 12 to 14, of the Champions League regulations published by CAF set out the order for two-legged qualifying ties: the higher aggregate goals tally takes precedence; if the teams are level, the side with more away goals progresses; if away goals are also level, penalty kicks determine the winner. CAF applied the away-goals rule to Wiliete against Sundowns.

Had the second leg also ended 0-0, the teams would have been tied on away goals too and would have needed a shoot-out. At 1-1, Wiliete already held the decisive advantage. A Sundowns win in the second leg would instead have sent the South African side through on aggregate. Two draws therefore do not automatically secure qualification: the number of goals scored away from home explains this outcome.

How the Pretoria draw unfolded

Sundowns took the lead in the 11th minute. Reuters and SABC Sport identify the scorer as Tashreeq Matthews, whereas CAF's own match report uses the surname Williams for that goal. This discrepancy does not change the score or qualification rule. Mabululu, identified by CAF as Cristóvão Paciência, equalised in the 49th minute, four minutes after the break.

Following the equaliser, the home side needed another goal to overcome Wiliete. SABC Sport describes Sundowns chances and saves by goalkeeper Elber Delgado, but no further goal was scored. The match remained 1-1 until the final whistle.

What qualification means

Wiliete reached the competition's group stage for the first time, according to CAF and Reuters. Sundowns, the previous season's champions, exited in the second preliminary round after appearing in the group stage in each of the preceding 11 editions, according to Reuters. The next stage consists of 16 clubs in four groups. Information checked on 24 October 2026, after both matches had finished.
