Jamaica vs Mexico: how away goals could decide the Nations League tie

Two November 2026 quarterfinal legs in Kingston and Monterrey will be settled by aggregate goals, then away goals if needed, with 2027 Gold Cup stakes.

Jamaica and Mexico will meet in the 2026/27 Concacaf Nations League A quarterfinals under a rule that could settle the tie: away goals. The aggregate score across the two legs comes first. If the teams finish level on aggregate, the side with more goals scored away from home advances. If they are still level, Concacaf provides for extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout. As of October 28, 2026, both matches remained scheduled and there were no results to count.

Jamaica vs Mexico: dates, kickoff times and home teams

Jamaica host the first leg in Kingston, with Mexico hosting the return leg in Monterrey. The times below are local to each city, based on Concacaf's published schedule. The confederation retained the Jamaican venue in its October 22 update; N+ reported on the same date that the match would not be relocated.

Second leg: Mexico vs JamaicaTuesday, November 17, 2026Estadio Monterrey, Monterrey, Mexico8:30 p.m.

Mexico entered the quarterfinals directly as the top seed among the four pre-seeded nations. Jamaica advanced through the League A group stage and was placed as the next-best group runner-up. Mexico's higher seeding determined which team hosted the second leg; it does not provide a separate tiebreak advantage.

How does the away-goals rule work?

Every goal scored in Kingston or Monterrey counts once toward the aggregate score, regardless of venue. Away goals are compared only if both teams score the same total over the two legs. For Mexico, away goals are those scored in Kingston; for Jamaica, they are those scored in Monterrey. If one team has more goals on aggregate, the away-goals tally cannot overturn the result.

Under Concacaf's published quarterfinal procedure, a level aggregate leads to an away-goals comparison. If that also remains tied, the series proceeds to extra time and, if required, penalties. Goals in a penalty shootout are not added to the aggregate score.

Four hypothetical results showing the tiebreak

The following scores are mathematical illustrations only, not predictions or results from matches already played. In each row, the first leg is Jamaica vs Mexico and the second leg is Mexico vs Jamaica.

First legSecond legAggregateOutcome after the two legs
1-10-01-1Mexico advance: one away goal to Jamaica's zero.
0-01-11-1Jamaica advance: one away goal to Mexico's zero.
1-11-12-2One away goal each: the tie goes to extra time.
2-01-02-1 to JamaicaJamaica advance on aggregate; away goals are not needed.

These illustrations show why the second-leg score cannot be interpreted on its own: the home venues, the aggregate and the away goals all matter.

What is at stake in the Nations League and the 2027 Gold Cup?

The series winner qualifies for the Concacaf Nations League Finals, scheduled for March 25-28, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. That team also secures direct qualification for the 2027 Concacaf Gold Cup. The loser is not automatically eliminated from Gold Cup contention: it moves to the Prelims, scheduled for March 2027, where it can still earn a place. An away-goals decision could therefore shape both teams' Nations League campaigns and their routes to the Gold Cup.

Information cutoff: schedule, venues and rules checked on October 28, 2026, and subject to further official announcements. No starting lineups or results for this tie were confirmed at that cutoff.
