FC Masar vs Mamelodi Sundowns: what the 2024 1-0 tells us before the 2026 opener

FC Masar face Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2026 CAF Women's Champions League opener on 1 November at 17:00 Cairo time. A look back at the decisive 2024 penalty, the clubs' more recent campaigns and Group A fixtures, without treating a past result as a prediction.

Egypt's FC Masar and South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies open their 2026 CAF Women's Champions League campaigns on Sunday, 1 November, at 17:00 Cairo time in Ismailia. Their Group A opener brings back one documented encounter: Masar beat Sundowns 1-0 in the 2024 group stage. That result belongs to the earlier edition and cannot be treated as a prediction for 2026.

How the 2024 match ended 1-0

On 10 November 2024 in Casablanca, Morocco, Masar played their first match in the continental finals against then defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in Group B. According to CAF's match report, Sandrine Niyonkuru converted a penalty at 45+2 minutes after a handball in the box. It was the only goal. The 1-0 scoreline was achieved in regular match play, not in a penalty shoot-out.

Masar went on to reach the semi-finals and finished third in 2024. In the bronze-medal match, they drew 0-0 with Edo Queens before winning the shoot-out 4-3. That run gives context to the Egyptian club's debut campaign, but the win over Sundowns is just one previous meeting, not a reliable sample for predicting a rematch.

What has changed for both clubs before the rematch

Egypt hosts the 2026 tournament, whereas the 2024 edition took place in Morocco. Masar are coming off another semi-final appearance in 2025: they lost 3-1 to TP Mazembe in the third-place match and finished fourth. Sundowns, African champions in 2021 and 2023, missed the 2025 finals and returned by winning the 2026 COSAFA regional qualifier, including a 2-1 final victory over ZESCO Ndola Girls.

Those paths demonstrate continental experience on both sides but do not establish a ranking for the November fixture. Masar's 2024 victory happened in a different host country, against the opponent's team of that season and within a campaign that has ended. A single old scoreline cannot establish who is favoured now.

Group A schedule and the route to the semi-finals

Group A also includes Morocco's FUS Rabat and Cameroon's Lekié Football Filles. CAF has scheduled the following matches involving Masar and Sundowns, with all kick-off times given in Cairo local time:

DateCairo timeFixture
1 Nov 202617:00FC Masar vs Mamelodi Sundowns
4 Nov 202614:00Lekié Football Filles vs Mamelodi Sundowns
4 Nov 202617:00FC Masar vs FUS Rabat
7 Nov 202614:00Lekié Football Filles vs FC Masar
7 Nov 202614:00Mamelodi Sundowns vs FUS Rabat

Eight clubs are divided into two groups of four. The top two in each group advance to the semi-finals on 11 November, where each group winner meets the other group's runner-up. The final is scheduled for 15 November in Ismailia. The opening game therefore matters to the standings, but it cannot by itself decide either Group A qualifying place.

What the head-to-head record can and cannot tell us

As of the 29 October 2026 check, FC Masar vs Mamelodi Sundowns remained a scheduled fixture. The 1-0 result, its goalscorer and Masar's third-place finish are historical facts from 2024; the group and kick-off time refer to the 2026 calendar. This preview does not present official starting line-ups, a future result or a win probability. The supported conclusion is that the tournament opener reunites two teams with a previous meeting documented by CAF.
