Al Shamal 3-1 Al Hilal: debutants end Saudi side's AFC Elite unbeaten streak

Al Shamal's 3-1 victory took them to five points in the 2026/27 AFC Champions League Elite West standings, one behind Al Hilal. Here is how both teams reached that position.

Al Shamal beat Al Hilal 3-1 on 27 October 2026 at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar, on matchday three of the 2026/27 AFC Champions League Elite West league stage. It was the Qatari debutants' first victory in the competition and, according to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Al Hilal's first league-stage defeat since the competition was revamped.

In the standings reported by the AFC on 28 October after the match, Al Shamal were sixth in the West with five points, one behind fifth-placed Al Hilal on six. The unbeaten streak that ended was in the Asian Champions League league stage; it is not a claim about Al Hilal's Saudi Pro League campaign.

How the 3-1 result unfolded

Wesley Saïd gave Al Shamal the lead in the eighth minute. Salem Al Dawsari equalised in the 32nd after an Al Hilal counterattack. The scores remained level until early in the second half, when Baghdad Bounedjah struck in the 48th minute and Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane added the third in the 54th. The scorers and minutes are recorded in the AFC's official coverage; Reuters also described the first-half response and the two goals that settled the match after the break.

The AFC singled out Riyad Mahrez's contribution and separately reported that coach David Prats praised his team's discipline and execution of the game plan. Those are assessments attributed to the confederation and the coach, rather than proof that one tactical factor alone determined the scoreline.

Al Shamal's debut and both teams' paths

Runners-up in Qatar's domestic league the previous season, Al Shamal qualified for the elite Asian competition for the first time. They opened with a 1-1 draw against Al Ittihad: Bounedjah scored in the 63rd minute before Georginio Wijnaldum equalised in stoppage time. On matchday two they drew 0-0 with Iran's Tractor in a game staged in Muscat, Oman. Their win over Al Hilal therefore followed two draws, not two defeats.

Al Hilal began this edition with a 2-1 win against Al Gharafa and a 2-0 victory over Al Sadd. All six results below refer only to the 2026/27 West league stage and exclude domestic league fixtures.

What the figures show after three games

ClubRecordPointsGoals for-against (difference)West position
Al Shamal1 win, 2 draws, 0 defeats54-2 (+2)6th
Al Hilal2 wins, 0 draws, 1 defeat65-4 (+1)5th

These totals add up each side's first three AFC Champions League Elite results: Al Shamal scored four goals and conceded two; Al Hilal scored five and conceded four. Three of the four goals Al Hilal had conceded in this edition came against Al Shamal. For the newcomers, three of their four goals scored came on matchday three.

Al Hilal's points advantage shrank to one, but the comparison covers just three games per team, against different opponents and with different home-and-away circumstances. The draw with Al Ittihad, goalless result against Tractor and victory over Al Hilal do not, on their own, establish a definitive ranking of the clubs' strength.

What changed in the table, and what cannot be concluded

In the AFC's update of 28 October, Al Hilal were fifth and Al Shamal sixth in the West. Under the format described by Reuters, the top eight in each 16-club regional league advance to the knockout stage. Being inside that group in the matchday-three snapshot does not secure qualification, with further league-stage games still to play.

Reuters reported that Simone Inzaghi's Al Hilal were without Rúben Neves and Sergej Milinković-Savić, while Gabriel Martinelli was injured and Crysencio Summerville suspended. These absences form part of the team-selection context but cannot, by themselves, be proven to have caused the defeat. The documented outcome is narrower: Al Shamal remained unbeaten after three matches, earned the first win of their continental debut and ended Al Hilal's unbeaten league-stage sequence in the revamped competition.
